she’s laying in bed but sleep isn’t going to come easy. he rolls over and kisses her forehead then whispers “goodnight” in her ear. she sits up and pushes the blankets aside. slowly she makes her way to the door. she leaves the bedroom and paces the hallway. the blood in her veins pumps faster than ever before. each heartbeat is louder than the previous one. fear and courage are fighting at the frontline. she takes a breath. exhales. she places her hand on the doorknob leading to the bedroom. she’s gone through this door many times but this time she moves with caution, as if the darkness within holds unseen demons, looming in the blackness, waiting to consume her. she sits down next to him and pulls the blankets over her lap. “i love you.” the words escape her mouth for the first time. her heart jumps and she is taken aback by how easily the words came out. “i love you too.” she can see his smile although the room is dark. her heart leaps into her throat. she grabs his face and kisses his lips. “really? you mean it?” her voice is now weak. “of course.” she kisses his lips over and over, her lips are trembling. a tear makes it’s way down the soft skin of her cheek. “baby, don’t cry.” she giggles in response and pulls him close. he holds her and whispers “i love you.”
